The One About Days Gone and Coming

Today I woke up and realized that 2013 will be over in literally five days and I really need to write at least one more post before that.

In case you were wondering, or not, all I've been doing is waking up, coming to work, going home, making dinner, eating, and sleeping. Throw in a few rounds of laundry a week, visiting my little siblings, celebrating one of their birthdays, and keeping up with those Kardashians...that's my life. Anybody got a spare life I can borrow? No?

Speaking of birthdays, I'm such a terrible person to have not written about the birthdays of two of the most important people in my life. Both in this month. One is my little sister. She turned 8 on 19 December and claims she does not feel even a little more grown up than she did on 18 December. Puzzler! I know! We threw a little party for her and fun was had by all. She's growing up so fast it's both super cool and terrifying at the same time.

And before that, on 05 December, my bestest friend in the whole world, Hasna, turned "my age." Hee! Notice how I tried to be vague about it! Hasna and I met in eighth grade and we've been BFFs since the ninth. We've shared so many great memories. We stole a magazine photo of Hayden Chritensen from our school. That is literally the only time I have ever stolen anything in my life, I swear! And I so love that I have that with her - regardless of how unethical it might have been.

Also, one time we borrowed a story book from the library and turned out it had pictures of the movie. The movie?! Varsity Blues! You know who starred in it!! Before we returned the book, we sort of permanently borrowed all the images in there because it was Paul Walker in football gear and why not!? When he passed away the other day, we shared a moment of nostalgia and I was glad we have that memory too.

There are so many countless others. She's been there for me even when she wasn't here. Like when she was all the way in China, and in Bangladesh where she still is now, she was still there for me. We missed each others weddings and it's awful but we were both there in spirit. During the years we've been apart we'e missed so many birthdays and other important events but that's okay because like I said, we have so many good memories. Now that I think about it, I don't think I have one bad memory of her.

Best thing is, she is now married to my childhood friend and they are beautiful together! Hasna is coming home in a week and I am completely over the moon about that. It's been way too long since we've seen each other. But the time apart was so worth it because she is a doctor now and I am crazy proud of her. I'll formally introduce her to you all when she gets here :)

In an entirely unrelated note, today marks 9 years since the devastating Tsunami in 2004. A moment of silence was observed on the streets of Male' this morning. I hope everyone that suffered that fateful day is now back on their feet, tall and strong.

Merry Christmas to all my friends celebrating!
Have a good day!

Do You Take Your Morning Coffee with Sugar? Creamer?...Fruit Fly?

Hey...no pressure! It's not like you have to choose just one. You can have all three or any combination of two if you wanted!

But seriously though. Did the entire world know about fruit flies being attracted to coffee except me?

This never happened to me at home. But that may be because I use cheap coffee...I don't know. I'm just saying.

At work we have a sweet Lavazza Blue coffee machine and I have just about given up having my morning coffee at home. Okay, I already have. Completely. And then when I go home and need a caffeine fix, I just get my cheap coffee and cry great big tears into it.

YES! That's The Does of Reality in the background!

Anyway...back to the matter at hand...fruit flies attempting to commit suicide in MY COFFEE!

I have thrown out two good cups because I have found multiple - not one, not two, but multiple, fruit flies floating around in it. It's not like I just left the cup somewhere. I just place it on my desk, check an email and looked back and there they are.

I asked Google and turns out half the world already knows about this. They actually use coffee to trap those little mofos! But I'm sure you already knew that.

So yeah. Other than Nafew (also) getting getting a job, and my mom coming home (and me seeing her after two whole years), fruit flies in my coffee is the newest thing happening in my life. That is if you don't count me trying to settle into this new job that I totally love!

What's been going on in your life? Anything as exciting as fruit flies?

Ashton's Inspiring Speech

Lets get serious for a minute here.

I just came across an acceptance speech by Ashton Kutcher at this year's Teen Choice Awards that blew my mind. It's not that he said anything new. It's all been said before a million times by a million people. But then again,  there's nothing wrong with repeating something so good and so precious!

If you haven't seen this, please watch it. And then show it to your sons and daughters. Your sisters and your brothers. Your nieces and nephews. And your students. Everyone should hear this. And take a moment to think about it. And then do something about it!

The sad thing about this video, although it is extremely inspiring, is the behavior of the young girls and boys in audience. My guess is none of them heard a word he said. Or maybe they did. But I think it's a safe bet to say not a lot of them remembers it. They just kept screaming at randoms words he spoke, all the while being completely oblivious to the importance of those words.

I've always been a fan of Ashton. And after watching this, I'm honored to have met and spoken to him; even if it was brief. This is a smart person. If you watch the video on YouTube, you can see a lot of comments by people who refuse to accept the fact that this was a good speech. It's best to ignore those people. Because not one word of this is false. It's all true and makes so much sense. And it needs to be said more often. Maybe then, it might stick with a handful of kids that would eventually grow up to be amazing people.

Please share.
Have a good day :)

Dear Guys

Dear Guys,

I'm no fashion Guru or Icon or whatever people call it these days. I don't always follow the trends either. Because some trends are stupid. And I don't want any part of it.

When I was younger, I saw a lot of trends come and go. And while it was among men and women equally, the biggest changes always seem to happen to women's fashion. Particularly in the way they dress; even more than the hairstyles and accessories.

And then suddenly it's 2013 and HOLY SHIT! You guys seem to have gone so much more crazier.

Like this trend where you guys, more specifically teen and young adult guys, happen to wear your pants around your knees. Hey! I think it's super sexy when you wear it a little low on your torso. But any lower than that should not be allowed! I don't want to see your ass hanging out!

And unless you're a hot model and you're doing some sort of underwear photo shoot, I don't want to see your underwear either, thank you very much!

I've seen all levels of extremes on this trend. I'm sure you're all familiar with Justin Bieber and his pants (I really hope nobody finds my blog searching for that!), whether you wanted to or not, because it's everywhere. And then there are several others. I've even seen some hip hop sorta people wearing their pants lower than there knees! I wonder how they walk. Or do anything really. Don't answer that! I don't want to know.

Anyhoo...a couple of weeks ago I went shopping, and saw this guy.

It felt rude to take a picture.

This guy had an entirely new thing going on with his pants! He wore it low, as is the fashion these days, but nobody told him that he's supposed to wear boxer shorts with this look!

Poor dude was wearing tight black briefs! And because his pants were hanging low, people could literally see part of his thighs as he rushed to what seemed like somewhere really cool by the looks of the rest of his outfit. And hair.

For a second I wasn't sure what I was seeing. And then I realized It was flesh and I was like MY EYES! MY EYES!!

So my point is, while you may think it's cool to wear, it's definitely not cool to look at. In fact, it's incredibly disturbing. Especially when we have to look at your hairy thighs!

So, regardless of the lack of my fashion expertise, I think I speak for people all over the world when I say that you should,  as a public service or just as something for yourself, STOP IT!

Thank you

Sincerely,
Girls Everywhere

Honey, I'm home!

You guys, I'm home after two whole years! For the last two weeks I've been soooo busy. The week leading up to my flight home, I was busy sorting out my withdrawal from the University and after that I was busy packing up two years of life into two suitcases.

All those tiny islands make my country :)

I came home on Friday night and it's been a little chaotic since then too. I've been visiting family, catching up with friends, and cleaning out and settling into our room which we rented out before we left and was pretty much falling apart by the time we got here. I don't even know how it got so bad in only two years.

So many stuff was broken. Mostly really weird stuff. Like I found that near my closet, two fist sized chunks of wall was missing. Walls of concrete and bricks!! And the can inside the very expensive wastepaper bin was gone. How do you break a tin can enclosed in another tin can?! And the mattress had gone a bit stinky because I don't think they knew sheets were meant to be washed! Fortunately we flipped it over and it's okay for now but I'm definitely buying a new one as soon as I get a job.

So home is very stuffy and crowded and...uh...just really really small. I mean the country and the city. But I really don't mind because now I'm so close to the people I love.

I am going to miss shopping malls, and fast food places, and the really good friends I made over the two years I stayed in Malaysia. What I am not going to miss is the really old place we lived in. Especially the suspicious hand print which was a little too high up on the wall directly above the door of the bathroom. That was creepy.

Last day in Malaysia

I miss writing and reading blogs. My email inbox is full of unread messages and my Bloglovin is overflowing with unread posts. I will catch up eventually.

In the mean time, I just wanted to tell you I miss you guys and please don't forget me!

In other news, I forgot to put salt in the flat bread I made today. And the spicy tuna I made to go with it! I saved the tuna but there was no way of saving the bread. Also, I had to paste a small picture on a job application form for my husband and there was no glue so I used clear nail polish, and it worked! So I'm thinking I'm not losing my mind just yet.

What have you been doing lately?

A Story of Love At First Sight

I get attached to crap. All the time. Not physically! Because duh?!

It's more of a sentimental attachment and you will definitely think some of those things are super weird. I get attached to books. I get attached to clothes; the longer I have them, the more I love them. Everyone else I know gets bored of their clothes real fast and keeps changing them. Not me. I get attached to them. And when it comes to the point that I absolutely have to throw it away and get a new one, I kinda sorta want the exact same one. I get attached to a whole bunch of things.

Also, I am the overly attached girlfriend/wife minus the CRAZY. My husband tells me that all the time.

I'm about to go home after two years. And that means I'm gonna have to leave somethings I brought with me behind. Because they are heavy and it's stupid to carry them all the way home. I'm not going to bore you guys with every single thing I am going to leave and miss because (a) the list is pretty long, and (b) there is such a thing as too much information. No. I'll just tell you about this one thing because of all the things I will be leaving behind, this one holds the most sentimental value for me, and also because it will probably be pretty strange for anyone other than me.

It's cutlery.

Not silver. Not even expensive. Just regular stainless steel cutlery, except it's not regular for me. It is incredibly special for me because it hold history. I am sad to let it go but it makes no sense to take them home with me. Let me tell you the story.

This was many, many years ago. I was in high school. My mom always visited me every semester break and we try to spend as much time as possible during those weeks. And we went shopping  a lot. My mom is crazy in love with kitchen stuff. Appliances, dishes, pots and pans, decorative items...just about anything you can stuff into a kitchen, she bought. So we were in a lot of stores that sold such items.

One time when we were in a department store, in the kitcheny(?) isle, I saw this particular set of cutlery. It was love at first sight. I told mom to buy it because awwn, so pretty, but she was like Oh.My.God we already have too many of those and NO!

But, but, so pretty! I had no idea what I would do with them if she bought them because she lives far away and I hardly go there (She usually came to me) but for some reason I didn't want to leave without them.

And then I had this wildly ridiculous idea and tried so see if it would work.

I told her to buy them for me, and keep them with her for the time being. She asked when I would be needing them. I told her to keep them safe until I get married. I don't know what I was thinking! I was 17. I did not have a boyfriend. My future plans ended a couple of hours ahead from then.

But it worked! She bought them!

A little over six years later, she handed them to me when I got married. So when we moved here eight months after, I brought them with me. Because they were mine. And they were so, so special.

Many pieces have mysteriously disappeared the two plus years after that. But I still love them just as much as the day when I first saw them. I know they're just steel. And they're old now. But I'm going to miss them dearly.

Tell me about the stuff you get attached to!

10 Songs That Were On a Constant Loop on My mp3 Player in 2006

I checked out today's listicle challenge on Northwestmommy yesterday and turns out it's our favorite songs in the final year of high school.

Read that sentence again and tell me what's not to like about it. There isn't. It's a fabulous sentence because it has 'North West' in it. It has 'list', and 'challenge' which translates to easiest blog posts ever, and it says 'songs in high school.'

Brace yourselves baecause here's my list. Also, I would like to dedicate this post to my bestest friend in the world, Hasna, because songs are pretty much all we ever talked about then...ahem...besides boys I mean.

1. Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake.
I loved this guy in his yellow noodle haired N-Sync days, and I love him still. Loyal fan right here!

2. Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz
I have spent a stupid amount of time to find who they really are. I might have found it a while ago, I forget. Anyway they were cool and I loved listening to them.

3. When I'm Gone - Eminem
Hey! What can I say. I don't have a favorite genre. What's good is good.

4.  Déjà-vu - Beyonce feat. Jay-Z
Love Beyonce!! She's the best :)

5. Smack That - Akon Feat. Eminem
Don't ask because I can't explain.

6. SOS - Rhianna
It's catchy. Don't try to deny it.

7. Buttons - Pussycat Dolls
I probably loved it so much because of the video. I love videos with good dancing.

8. Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
Her songs were different...in a good way. I can't quite put my finger on what she does different though.

9. You're beautiful - James Blunt
One of the two songs that I know he did well. I never tried to find if there were any more.

10. Bad Day - Daniel Powter
It's a good song to listen to on a bad day.

I'm thinking I might regret making this list because there probably will come a day I will be embarrassed to admit this list. Well, it's not today...so I'm going to just leave it here and come back a few years later to see how I feel.

What were your favorite songs in your last year of high school?

What Rhymes With Hug Me?

You all know the song Blurred Lines, right? NO! Oh come onnnn! It's like the best song ever with one of the weirdest videos you'll see besides that wrecking ball video of Miley (love that song by the way). Seriously though, it was number one on Billboard hot 100 forever until Katy Perry pushed it down a spot two weeks ago.

I was obsessed with the song. Still am actually. It's catchy and fun and I couldn't get enough of it! It was on a constant loop on my computer and phone for weeks and I have yet to get sick of it.

Anyhoo...remember this one line in the song that goes,

You wanna hug me?
What rhymes with hug me?

I mean that's just priceless. I've seen several youtube comments about that line since the video came out and some are funny as heck! But then tonight I found the gem you have got to know about. May be you already do...we'll see.

Here's how I found it. Every once in a while I watch TMZ clips on YouTube. Not because I want to catch up on celebrity gossip though (I'm always caught up!), but because the narration is hilarious. So tonight I watched this clip where they were talking about this particular line of the song. They actually asked Robin Thicke and he said it's 'Love me.'

And then this guy on the show goes to the group, 'You do know that there is a website called 'What Rhymes With Hug Me?'

They didn't. Neither did I! They checked it out and I laughed watching it. And then I went on to search the interwebs myself and found the website! Some of it is pretty lame but some are funny too.

But that's not why I'm writing about it. I'm writing because the website actually EXISTS! Not to sound all old and cranky but what the actual fahk is the world coming to? Some people have too much time. I mean who listens to a song, hear the line and think, 'Hmm, I should make a website for this.'

Well, I don't know who it is but someone sure did. And that person needs to take a minute to think about what he/she is doing with their life. Also, please disregard the fact that all this is coming from a 26 year old that watched a TMZ clip on YouTube.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go and get a life. Meanwhile, tell me your thoughts on this post that I'm now realizing is pretty strange and pointless.

Have a good day :)

Please Do Come Back

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Lately...

1. The other day I wrote one of the easiest papers ever! Thirty minutes in, I was done and handed the paper to the lecturer and told her I should get full marks. Meanwhile some had a look of devastation on there faces like they just wanted to give up. I'm sorry. I'm deliberately misleading you here. I'm not that smart. Thing is, the lecturer gave us some pointers. So the people who were sitting there blankly staring at the paper were just lazy.

2. People kept telling me that The Conjuring is scary as fahk. And people who saw it were trying suspiciously hard to convince others that it's totally true. My friend said that grown ass men were spending sleepless nights after watching it. I had to see this! So we went.

And was disappointed. Because while it is a really good movie with good acting and a great story, it was not that scary. I wanted to be scared and I was. But not the way I wanted to. Let me use an everyday example to explain to you how I was scared.

Picture yourself alone (it's very important that you're alone!) at home on a beautiful evening, and you're in bed just enjoying some TV or a book or something. Suddenly someone taps you on your shoulder from behind. You would jump. Heck! I can't think of anyone who wouldn't. Because you're obviously alone so who the fahk was that right?

Right. That was the kind of scared I was. Nothing that would last. After the movie when we were walking to the car, a bug flew by me and brushed my hand. I did not see it but I told my friend that I think a bug flew by. A person scared by that movie would probably think something supernatural was around, right?

Also, outside the cinema there was a huge life-sized cutout of those One Direction guys. My husband posed with it I have this most hilarious picture but he refuses to let me post it here so your imagination would have to suffice.

3. All assignments are handed in and I have a lot of free time so I have been drawing and doodling and trying to paint and stuff. Notice I said trying? Yeah. That's because I need a lot of practice.

Nafew bought me some painting supplies the other day and I'm over the moon but I've run out of paper already :(

4. This is how students take notes in class now. This was yesterday afternoon. I prefer writing. The old fashioned way. Because apparently I'm old.

5. Also, I am so excited it's September! All my favorite shows are going to come back and I can't wait.

How are you all? What's been happening lately?

Eid Road Trip...Finally!

Back at home, we always celebrate Eid by cooking giant feasts and the families gathering to spend quality time and having fun. We moved here to Malaysia in September 2011, right after Eid al Fitr that year and this is our second Eid here. Last year we did absolutely nothing and we didn't want that happening again so we planned a trip.

Our original plan was to go on Friday morning and come back in the early hours of Saturday. But plans changed because something came up for our friend. So we went on Thursday afternoon instead.

The road trip was really fun. I enjoyed the countryside scenery very much. The endless palm fields were beautiful. The many cemeteries we passed, not so much.

The first beach we went to was not so pretty but the view from the pier was. We also spent sometime on the grassy area nearby. It was so peaceful and beautiful.

The second beach was much better but it wasn't the best, I suppose because I kept comparing it to the beaches back home. It was still a lot of fun though. We the took a boat ride which turned out great.

After hanging around the beach, we headed off to find the lighthouse Nafew read about a few nights ago. On our way there, we stopped at a gas station for a bathroom and snack break after which we realized we had run out of gas. In the gas station. Could there be a better place to run out of gas? I don't think so.

We made it a little before sundown.

As we reached there, we realized that we were under informed. We knew we couldn't drive all the way to the lighthouse - apparently it was a short walk away. The short walk, however, turned out to be a short hike. Less than half way up, I was dying because obviously that's how fit I am, so Nafew decided to carry me. And then like after a minute HE was dying so he put me down and I dragged myself up.

The view was so, so gorgeous up there. We almost couldn't go all the way up to the lighthouse, but luck found us for the second time that day when we met a guy that works there. He lead us up and let us spend a few minutes getting our pictures taken.

And then we left for home, before which we went all the way to Sunway to run an errand and have dinner. By the time we got home, it was 2 am and we crashed until Friday afternoon.

Mom

Happy Birthday, Mom!

I miss you so very much. You're the only constant in my life that has never changed, ever. No matter what happens or where I am, deep inside I always know you're there for me. I know I can always count on you. And I love that feeling.

You're a great person with a huge heart and those who don't see it do not deserve you. So don't let that get to you. I love you more than enough for all of them.

Having to recycle a picture of you from an old post reminds me so much more that I haven't seen you for way too long. You have no idea how much I wish we were together to celebrate today. Hopefully next year I'll be there.

I hope you have a wonderful day.
I love you.

Look at This Book I Found...LOOK AT IT!!

It felt rude to not share this with the world.

I don't own it...nor do I plan to, but now I really want to know WHY!!

I Died Laughing

Oh. My. God! You guys!! Did you see Sunday night's episode of True Blood? It was emotional confusion for me. Sometimes I was in floods crying, and then I was burning with anger, and then this one moment I died laughing. If you love the show and haven't watched the episode please don't read any further. There are spoilers. Those who have watched come on ahead and discuss this scene with me.

You know that scene when the roof opened in the white room, where they were supposed to meet the true death and stuff? Yep. That was my favorite. I'm a little behind in watching the series cos I have no cable and I watch it online. But the upside is I get to capture screen shots.

Like this one. By far the best moment of the episode for me. And by best I mean the funniest.

Don't tell me you didn't burst out laughing when Steve said Jason Stackhouse instead of Sarah.

And the look on Jason's face when he heard that

And then Ginger's scream when Steve died...

and Jason's reaction to that scream!

It was a good episode. The previous episodes were a bit so so to me because it's a bit too much for me. Particularly about Bill being divine and all. I still love the show though. The episode where Terry died was so sad yet so good. And they keep making Eric sad and cry. Do they not know what it does to women all around the world when he cries?!?

It breaks our hearts is what it does.

Don't you agree? Tell me your thoughts about this episode.

Eid Mubarak! A Day Late :)

Final day of Ramadan was Wednesday and we went to Cyberjaya for our breakfast.
This was on the way.

Yesterday was Eid al Fitr! Eid Mubarak to all my muslim friends :)
We went on a road trip yesterday.

This was on the way, in the car.

This was also on the way.

And this is the view from the a lighthouse we went to.

Also from the lighthouse.

We had a great time yesterday.
I will write more about the trip when I get the 'real' pictures because these are just from my phone.
Happy Eid and happy Friday everyone :)

A List of Nothings I Have Been Doing Because I'm Not Writing

The title is a little misleading. I'm sorry about that. I haven't really been doing much lately. My days are pretty routine and boring these days. On week days, I wake up whenever I have class, come back and cook something before sundown, break my fast and then I lay around doing a bunch of nothings until it's time to grab a late dinner and go to bed sometime in the am. And here is the list of what I've been doing.

1. I just started reading this book.

I don't really read autobiographies but I was in my lecturer's office the other day and this book just wouldn't let me leave without it. So here I am at home with it, and it's pretty good. It's very well written. I expected it to be boring but it's really very interesting and I keep finding myself thinking about it when doing other stuff too!

2. Speaking of unexpected...a happy accident happened a few days ago.

I don't know how it works in the other parts of the world but here in Malaysia, Universities are hunting grounds for business owners. They often set up some tables at our university and displays all kinds of colorful and sparkly stuff that are sure bait to reel in innocent students.

There was one last week selling sunglasses and prescription glasses. They even had an eye checking thingy set up. Yeah. These people are committed. Nafew saw a pair of sunglasses that he thought would fit us (we wear the same size - the smallest size anyone is carrying because we're two small people), and wanted to check it out; with no plans to buy them. But his overly excited friend waves his hand around and down went the sunglasses. The sales dude picked it up and saw a micro spot on the lens, which he couldn't wipe away, so Nafew had to buy them. And later in class he wiped to dot away! It was a MIRACLE!

So I came home to find these and I forgot how tired and sleepy and hungry I was.

Even if we're a few hundred poorer now, I'm not even sad, because I look fabulous in them!

3. Also, I started watching 2 Broke Girls and I love it. It's hiatus season for most shows I watch except Dexter and True Blood, so I started watching it because apparently two shows per week is not enough for me. The two shows air on the same night so technically they can be counted as one, right?

Anyway, I love Max. She is the right kind of funny, unlike Jess in New Girl. I don't hate that show, I actually kind of like it, but Jess is so, so, so annoying I have thought about not watching it many times.

4. Sleeping.

5. As usual, browsing through random funny stuff on the internet. While doing so, I came across this place they claim is an abandoned underwater strip club and I was going to write about it but Emelie over at Awkwardly Alive and Pleasantly Peculiar wrote about it so you can go over there to read about it :)

6. Writing papers because there always seem to be one due I can't really keep track! Sometimes I don't even know when they were assigned!

7. Not reading a lot of blogs. I should change that. I will change that.

That's all.
Have a good weekend!

The One About a Lot of Things

Hey guys,
It's been a while huh? Yeah, it has been a pretty packed month for me. Still is actually.

We're observing fasting this month because it's Ramadan and I have to go to classes anyway. Do you KNOW what that means? It means I sleep around 4 am and have to wake up two or three hours later to go to class without having any COFFEE!! I think I have told you before, I am not a very nice person without my morning coffee. Somehow my communication skills and my caffeine intake are interrelated.

Why don't I sleep earlier you ask? Well, it's because since we're fasting everyday, eating as late as possible makes us not pass out of hunger during the day. Yeah, that's why. Also, because we're fasting, I can't come home after classes and take a nap. I gotta run into the kitchen to make us something to eat to break our fast. Some days we go out though, because if not I might just sit on the kitchen floor and cry.

Please don't think I am complaining because I have to fast. I am not. I have no problem with not eating. But I DO have a problem with not having coffee and going to morning classes. That's my only problem you guys. I swear.

Also, it's that time of the semester when all assignments are due and there is a mid-term exam like every week. That's why I'm super busy, I hope you all understand.

But hey! It's not all bad. Staying hungry for thirteen hours straight makes you want to eat something good for breakfast everyday. You know what I mean? No? I mean, you don't want to eat just anything. So I've been making a bunch of different stuff lately. And it's pretty cool. The coolest one yet was last week. It's probably no big deal for most people, but for me it is!

A week ago, Nafew decided to buy a duck. I don't know why, he just did. Maybe he had a dream. I have never cooked a duck in my life. I haven't seen anyone cook a duck. Heck! I have never eaten duck before! But he bought it anyway. And it was a whole freaking duck. With the head and feet! Don't believe me?

HA! Told ya!
Please disregard my disgusting kitchen :/ The place is old as fahk.

So we went to Mr. YouTube to learn how to debone the thing because I didn't want to cook the bird whole my first time. And Nafew did it! It wasn't too bad considering it was his first attempt and we didn't have the right knife or the right work surface. Yep, we don't have kitchen counters. That's how old the place is.

That's not technically a countertop because it's this small square at the end
of the thing where we keep a cheap gas stove on :D

And then I went to Mr. Google for a recipe and every single one kept asking for shit I have never heard of, or shit I can't put in my food, so I took bits and pieces of everything and made this!

Roasted duck with orange sauce, which I forgot to take a picture of.

I'm not posting a recipe here because...um...I never post recipes. But if you maybe want it, let me know and I will email it to you :)

We're gonna get a four day vacation to celebrate Eid al-Fitr and we're hoping to go somewhere and have fun.

PS: 26th July was Independence Day back home, so Happy Independence Day to all Maldivians out there!

Have a great weekend! :D

The One Where I Went to a Concert

Remember that time I told you about going to this music competition and I had something to tell you about it? This is the post where I do!

It was a great night in so many ways. First of all, I haven't been to a music show in forever and I missed it. And it was so great being there. Live rock music is the best!

Secondly, our friend won the award for best vocalist and we were thrilled for him :D

Also, there were so many people I know so it was fun hanging out with them.

Before the competition started, there were two opening bands. The first one was a staff band of the university where the competition was held and this lady came up on stage and murdered Rihanna's Diamonds and I wanted to leave. But then this local band named Hard Candy came up and they were awesome!

But the highlight of the night was when this competing band named The Fallen came on. Jaws hit the floor when this leggy lady in knee high stockings and a pair of hot pants belted out a incredible rock song. She claims her name is Sunshine but there nothing sunny or shiny about the songs she sang.

Start from 3:40. And yes, it's really her that's singing.

And later my husband ditched me for  a photo op with her. Nah! I told him to go because all the guys were clamoring for her attention and he was stuck with me. I waited to post this because I wanted to get that picture from our friend with the fancy camera but he keeps forgetting.

So there you go. The night the girl with the voice that I can't describe because my vocabulary won't allow me blew everyone away.

Have a great weekend!

Nocturnal Wisdom

Lately I've been noticing that I drink a lot of water at night. Particularly close to bed time. I have also noticed that I don't drink nearly as much water during the day. Especially on weekdays. Because I have classes on weekdays and more water means more bathroom breaks and I really don't like using public bathrooms. But then again, who does?

When I was little, I remember being told that I have to drink at least seven glasses of water a day. And then somewhere down the line it changed to ten I suppose because of global warming and all - I really don't know for sure because I'm not a scientist okay? I'm sure the ten has now become a twelve or a fifteen, I haven't been keeping track.

Nigella Lawson is a self diagnosed 'Aquaholic.' Apparently she drinks like three liters of water. At night. Also around bed time. But I only drink like half of that so I guess I'm not that far gone yet.

Did you know that if you drink too much water your cells could swell and burst?! Me neither! But I'm pretty sure I heard it somewhere, so I'm gonna keep it in mind. Just in case you know, to be on the safe side. Also, according to the Spice Girls too much of something is something, I forget the actual lines and I don't want to look it up but, I'm sure it it wasn't a good thing.

PS: This post is brought to you by insomnia, or so I think because this is the crap I think about when I wake up to drink water and can't go back to sleep at four in the morning .

PPS: Ramadan Mubarak to all my Muslim friends out there :)

Rock Concerts, Lingerie Shopping, and Maahefun

I've been having a pretty cool weekend. By cool I mean totally average for everyone else out there, but for me. I hardly go out. For many reasons. But this weekend, I haven't stayed home a single day.

Did I tell you that my weekends start on Thursday afternoon? Because my last class of the week ends and three on Thursday!? It totally does!

Anyway, here's what I have been up to.

On Friday I went underwear shopping with a friend because I haven't done that in forever - because Nafew won't go with me. Apparently it makes him feel uncomfortable.

But hey! Who knew you could have so much fun shopping for lingerie? My friend took me to this small boutique she goes to all the time and I went crazy in there. I kept grabbing handfuls of stuff in all colors and patterns so that I can TRY THEM ALL!!

Then in the changing room I was so delighted that all of them fit perfectly and made me look like I had something to show off...lol. But then it got weird when the sales lady stepped into the changing room. Unannounced. And took over the fitting. She was all in my business adjusting my personal stuff and I felt a bit awkward. I mean, I was doing just fine by myself thank you very much!

I couldn't upload an actual picture of me in my newly purchased
articles of sexiness, so I drew a picture of me in the changing room
for you instead :)

Yesterday I went to see a concert. It was more like a competition but it was so much fun! It began a little mellow and honestly boring, but then the bands began rocking hard and it was insane. I'll write another post about it with more details because boy do I have something to tell you about that night! And I'm going to need the pictures from my friend to show you guys.

And today I am going to a 'Maahefun'

Maahefun: Celebration marks the beginning of the Ramadan, Where the Muslims in Maldives celebrate the taking of their last meal before beginning the month-long fasting. It is a traditional celebration where everybody gathered to have their last meal before fasting  (Wikipedia, 2013)

Turns out I can't tell you all about traditions of my home without consulting the internet but there you go.I'm expecting it to be fun because there will be live music and food and people I know.

Will be back with more :)
Hope you're having a great weekend!

I Hear They Work Really Hard But They Are of No Use To Me

Let’s talk about ants. I moved to my new place knowing I’ll have a few problems with sharing a kitchen with two guys. But what I came to was not what I had expected. They didn't seem to be too familiar with the concept of regularly cleaning up the place where they keep their food. So shit kept piling up in places and ants found them. I came here to find a whole bunch of ant eggs on top of their refrigerator. I am so glad I decided to bring my own refrigerator with me.

Anyhoo, I have been trying to clear them away. I sprayed insecticide wherever I found them. Hee, hee! That reminds me of a joke I heard ages ago.

A large number of ants were found dead today. It is suspected that they committed insecticide. LOL!

Ahem. Back to the topic.

I keep the kitchen as clean as I can (I wanted to say really clean but standards among individuals may vary, so there). Everything is put away. Nothing with food in it is kept without a lid. And I wipe the counters and table after each use, and every time I see even a single ant on them. I am tired now but the ants keep coming.

Last night I washed the container I keep sugar in. Then I left an unopened bag of sugar on the counter because the container was not dry yet. And today I woke up to find ants in the bag of sugar I had not opened yet! GAH!

Sometimes I keep stuff like muffins or cupcakes in the microwave because I don’t want to put them in the refrigerator because it makes them hard and I don’t have the right sized Tupperware to put them in. We used to do it all the time in the other apartment in case an ant might find it, and it worked. Not in this house though. The other day, I found them in there too!

Also, I have never HEARD of ants getting into refrigerators in my life. But in this apartment they do. They only make it to the very bottom and die of cold there. It’s super gross!

I asked Google, but it kept telling me to find the source and pour boiling water in there to kill the queen. I don’t know where the source is! I have searched everywhere and guess what? They seem to be coming from everywhere too! Google did tell me to do a bunch of other stuff but they all involved finding the original nest and I can’t find it.

Ooh! And for about three days a few weeks since we moved, I kept waking up to a strange phenomenon. Every morning without fail for those three days, I kept finding masses of dead ants in the living room near the couch. I don’t know what caused it because it’s not there when I go to sleep. Strange huh?

So, I need help. If any of you know how to get rid of a kabillion ants please contact me.

Drawing Blanks

I'm stuck in a funk of sorts. I want to write so much, but I can't. I have posts already written but it doesn't feel like this is the right time to hit publish on those.

So here I am, writing this post on my phone hoping I can start writing soon.

In the mean time, here's my friend's shirt. I kinda want to steal it a little bit.

I mean, how cute is that!!
